I get a lot of messages asking when Cinema 2013 will be released. I’m incredibly flattered that this is something you guys are looking forward to. I couldn’t ask for more, really.
But I have to disappoint you (or rather, I already have, because I announced this a year ago), there will not be a Cinema 2013. Why? Cutting the very first Cinema was an amazing experience for me, and I learned a lot. The series found its structure there and by definition it set a standard for a Cinema video. And so for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, I built on that original idea.
Cutting the last two episodes of Cinema was very difficult, and I didn’t know why. I blamed it on creative exhaustion, but it turned out it was something else. My entire perception of editing had changed, thanks to [the films of]. For the better, I believe. But I was still working within borders I’d drawn when I was 15.
Believe it or not, I’ve actually been editing a lot this past year. I’ve kept under wraps what exactly I’ve been doing, because I feel like I’m rediscovering myself as an editor. That’s a difficult process and it’s hard enough without a persistent stream of feedback. But I think you will see the result of this process soon.
So as much as I like the look of Cinema 2013 (especially in italic, damn it), you’ll have to get your 2013 recap-fix elsewhere. New stuff is coming, just not before 2014. I’ll keep you posted! You can always send me messages if you’re a bit more curious, of course.
